Lance has been learning, practicing, and teaching industrial design since 1970. Currently Professor of Industrial Design at the University of Kansas, he has also taught full-time at Auburn University and Carrington in Auckland, New Zealand. Additionally, he has taught short courses at Konstfackskolan in Stockholm and been a visiting professor at Staffordshire University in England, Halmstad University in Sweden, and the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay in Mumbai, India. Before becoming a Fulbright Global Scholar in 2019, he was previously honoured as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in 2015.

Working alone or in collaboration with other professionals, he has designed numerous consumer products, bicycles, aircraft and boat interiors. Recently, his research efforts have been focused toward using design to create sustainable craft-based enterprises in rural communities in the US, Africa, Nepal, and India.

Lance is currently teaching a course at RMIT University as part of his Fullbright Scholarship and developing designs for cargo bikes in Nepal. During this talk Lance will share his experience in working with natural and sustainable materials.
